From V1.6.1.0 to V1.7.8.6

Overview

Speed up your website and increase your Google PageSpeed Insights score, as well as your SEO ranking, by converting your images to the new WebP format, while maintaining the image quality. Offer the original image formats to older browsers.

What this module does for you

directions_car Speed up your website
Our module helps you fulfill Google's recommendation of serving images in next-gen image formats, which occupy less and thus speed up the website page load.

  • Google says: "WebP images are smaller than their JPEG and PNG counterparts—usually on the magnitude of a 25–35% reduction in filesize. This decreases page sizes and improves performance. YouTube found that switching to WebP thumbnails resulted in 10% faster page loads." (https://web.dev/serve-images-webp/)
  • WebP images are usually 80% smaller than PNGs and 25-35% smaller than JPGs.
  • Images will be automatically converted to the WebP format whenever an image is loaded on a browser that supports WebP Images (Chrome, Firefox, Edge and soon Safari).
  • This will improve your Google PageSpeed Insights score, especially when dealing with PNG images (images with transparency - they will be up to 85% smaller).
  • You will be able to use PNG as the image quality in the Prestashop image settings. Converted to WebP, PNG images become much smaller, while retaining their quality and the transparency (alpha-channel) support.
  • You won't need to manually convert all your images - they will be automatically converted whenever they are loaded into a supported browser for the first time. This means you won't have to block your server with converting your whole image library at once.
  • Most hosting providers offer at least the GD library with WebP support as a conversion method, if using PHP 7+. If your hosting doesn't offer this, the module is able to use several other conversion methods, depending on your server configuration. If no conversion method is available on your server, you can also use a Ewww plan (https://ewww.io/plans/) or connect to a WordPress site which has WebP Express on it.
  • You can manually adjust the quality settings, to reduce the filesize even more and improve the performance even better.
  • You can select to use either a lossless conversion (no change in quality) or a lossy conversion (reduce even more the file size, at the expense of possibly reducing the image quality).
  • The module uses htaccess rules to automatically redirect to the WebP version of the image for supporting browsers. This means that you don't need to modify your theme templates to be able to use it.

What your customers will like

Customers will also benefit, because:
  • The website will load faster and the user experience will be better.
  • The image quality is maintained.
  • You can use PNG as the image quality in the Prestashop settings, without worrying because of the image size. This will mean better image quality for the customer.

Installation

Other

What browsers support WebP?
Currently, more than 80% of browsers support WebP Images:
  • Chrome 32+
  • Firefox 65+
  • Edge 18+
  • Opera 19+
  • Android Browser 4.2+
  • Opera Mini
  • Chrome for Android
  • Firefox for Android
  • Samsung Internet
  • Safari 14+

Safari 13 and older, as well as Internet Explorer 11, do not support WebP Images, but the module will serve the original JPG or PNG images. The images will NOT break on browsers that do not support WebP. They will be displayed just as before.

Features

  • The module automatically converts your PNG and JPEG images to WebP - while keeping the originals intact.
  • You won't need to manually convert all your images - they will be automatically converted whenever they are loaded into a supported browser for the first time. This means you won't have to block your server with converting your whole image library at once.
  • It automatically serves WebP images to browsers that support it (Chrome, Firefox, Edge and soon Safari - currently about 80% of browsers, but soon it will be more than 95%).
  • For older browsers, which don't support WebP, (especially Internet Explorer), the module automatically serves the original image.
  • The module uses htaccess rules to automatically redirect to the WebP version of the image for supporting browsers.
  • You can individually select whether to enabled the WebP conversion for JPEG or PNG images, or both.
  • You can also manually adjust the quality of the WebP conversion, as well as the converter to use out of the available converters.
  • You can select to use either a lossless conversion (no change in quality) or a lossy conversion (reduce even more the file size, at the expense of possibly reducing the image quality).
  • If no converter is available on your hosting, you can also use a Ewww plan or connect by API to another WebP Convert/WebP Express install from a WordPress site.
  • You can test the conversion in the backend and visually observe the end result (you can see the quality of the result, side-by-side, as well as the size reduction).

Recommendation

Please make sure that your PHP version is at least 5.6.

To use the converters, the following PHP modules need to be enabled:

  • ewww: a ewww.io subscription and the PHP curl module
  • WebP Convert Cloud Service - You must install Webp Convert Cloud Service on a server, or the WebP Express plugin for Wordpress - and supply the url and the API Key
